Text or Voice Acting?

Posted by Blank-Mage - May 19th, 2009

After my intros RAGING success, (Daily 5th, baby, YEAH!) I've been working on my sprite Tails fan fic. But seeing as to how I'm making it for you guys, I thought I'd ask: do you think I should go for voice actors, or do you prefer reading? I, for one, like text better because frankly? Voice acting seldom goes well. (And it's less effort. This is a pie chart on procrastination, etc.) However, I plan on having things get kinda emotional somewhere around episode 3... Anyway, I leave it to up to the masses.

I'd do voice acting if you can get good voice actors who are gonna put in a good performance, if not stick to text.

Tails fan fic?
You should probably scrap it right now and start something else.

Not trying to have a go at you or anything, it'd just be better for all of us and yourself in the long run.

Ouch....

(Also, no.)

Voice Actings should be added.

It shows more pro. Also add subtitles for that extra kick (and find out of a voice actor says something the text isnt)

I would go for voice acting if you have the talent for it. I don't know where your planning on getting voice actors but make them give samples first, ON MIC. Its important you realize peoples voices come out different on a recording so if your planning on getting your friends to do it, you might just end up screwing yourself over when you find people commenting on your submission saying, "Well pretty much everything was good but the voices. They were impossible to understand. Too much mumbling.." Thats why your questioning if you should get voice actors, but if you just get decent ones that can speak into a mic then your set. In that way its much better than just text. Though optional subtitles would be suggestible

Voice acting, but either way i suggest you to make something original instead of fanfic stuff.

I'd go with voice acting if the voices are good. Also, I could help give you some Tails' sprites, if you want. They're not mine, but they're good. All you have to do is when you use em, give credit to Tarnish. So you want em or not?

I've already got Sonic Advance 1, 2, and 3 sprite sheets, so I think I'm set, but it never hurts to have options. Sure, I'll check 'em out.

Unless you can find AMAZING sound-a-like voice actors, I'd keep it text. I've seen WAAAYYY too many sprite artists try to voice act their stuff and it never goes over well,
good lcuk, I'll be watching for ur next flash.

Being a voice actress myself (hinthintshamelessplugIloveSonichinth int) I'm on the fence about this.

It's not that hard to find good VAs, you need to learn where to look. However, since it's a sprite thing I'm wondering how the voices would mix with the sprites. I'm used to seeing sprites with text (like sprite comics) but hey, the voices might work.

Though...voices (good ones rather) do help make an emotional scene more intense.

Throw out the Tails thing, because that idea is gonna be shit no matter what.

Try making your own characters instead of stealing somebody else's, and write your own fiction. Stop being a fan and start being an animator.

Look, I can't trust Sega to write a good Tails story. And I LIKE being a fan, thank you very much.

I was going to say that, no, you should definitely go with text exclusively, but these guys seem to want voices.

Not to be hatin' on any of you voice actors, but most of the time they're embarrassingly bad. Like, can't-play-the-game-anymore embarrassing, or movie. It's just that amateur voice actors really seem to like making this super cheesy or super corny. If you're lucky, maybe even both.

I can voice act and have zero issue if it's a fucking Tails fan fic. Because I'm a filthy voice over whore.

You'll have to excuse me while I try get my face out of this palm.

Good luck with that. Tried industrial solvents?

Well at least my comment wasn't as blunt as Jonas. XD

But yeah...I'd totally VA for this if you want. I do a pretty good Rouge and/or Blaze voice.

Ok, shameless plug over.

Voice acting ofcource

i could do some voice acting for you
ive never done it b4 but
i believe i can do some fairly decent impressions and stuff
idk
i could send you some recordings i spose

Set a limit, like, if you don't find a good voice actor in a week, use text.

Sounds like a good plan.

I'm afraid to click this.

It depends. With reading, yes there's less work involved and it gives the interpretation on how the character would sound to the reader while with voice-acting, if you get good VAs to do the voices and the script is well written, it offers a bit of immersion for the reader and it allows the reader to connect better with the character. I think that what you should do is do text for a little bit so that if you can't get it off the ground, you don't end up with angry VAs and after a bit, go for the Voice-Acting.

It really depends, sometimes voices just kill something... and in plus it makes the over all size smaller so you can make it longer without having to worry about exceding the file limit. It's like legend of zelda! If they ever add full voice acting it just wouldn't be the same! Also I do some voice acting if your intrested, do what feels right for you and your project... cause lip-syncing is a bitch!

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought, but everyone votes VAs, so I'll give it a shot. (Though I'm not optimistic.)

I notice you said you can't rely on sega to make a good tails story.... YOU CAN't RELY ON SEGA PERIOD THESE DAY!!!! LOL!!!! Sonic and the back knight.... WTF WAS THAT!!!!!!!!!!??!?!?!111/1
